In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America's First Daughter

I quit reading a quarter of the way in when the author used the word "ghosted" in a WWI story. That is a recent term that never would have been used back then, plus little abbreviations here and there that are all the rage in 2025. I felt like I'd abruptly had a door slammed in my face in the jolt back to modern day, something very unwanted when I sit down to read a WWI story. I thought the Reese's Book Club award was a reassurance of a well-written book; not so for me.
Wow!

A powerful story based on real people and events. You’ll be cheering for these women the whole time and feel their pain and successes as your own. The ending had me in tears. Beautifully written book.

This book started a bit slow I was not drawn to reading it every day/night until midway. The fascinating story came together with Eve as she recalled her life as a spy for England in WWI . Charlie (Charlotte) the young protagonist began to “evolve” and became a much stronger character at that time also. Finn was the much needed stability for these two strong willed independent ladies. Lili was inspirational and based on an actual person. Rene supplied the human example of the treacherous aspect of war. It was well written and well worth reading .
A true page turner!

This is the 6th book I’ve read by this author. She never disappoints. Weaving historical and fictional characters together makes compelling reading.

So loved this historical fiction novel! With each turn of the page I got to know Eve, Finn, and Charlotte better and rooted and cheered for inner and outer peace for them. And yes, it happened!

One of the best books I have read in some time. Quinn keeps readers captivated and her character development is intricate and feels as though I’m in the scenes with them. The connection to not one but two world wars makes this read humbling as well. Looking forward to reading again and again in coming years!

The book's enchanting narrative took a regrettable turn in its final chapters, as the resolution of characters' lives unfolded with an unexpected shift toward clichéd romance, eroding the essence of its compelling historical fiction. The abrupt descent into predictability nearly derailed my engagement, leaving a lingering sense of disappointment. While 'The Rose Code' had been a triumph, the allure for further exploration of the author's works waned in the wake of this unfortunate conclusion. A lamentable divergence from the anticipated brilliance.

This is a quick, easy read. Full of historical data and mixed with fiction to combine two stories. Extremely riveting, entertaining, and hard to put down. The author does these women (both real and fictional) credit with this story. Highly recommended if you have any love for patriotism for our shared battles in both WW1 and WW2.

I stick with mostly the classics….Brontë sisters, Austen, Lousia May Alcott, you get it. I truly did NOT want this book to end. The author spins a captivating tale right from the beginning, and melds the two timelines together seamlessly. I’m about to start another book by this same author!

This is a layered suspenseful work of historical fiction that is impossible to put down. Somehow, the moving love story entertwined adds and not detracts. And throughout all the love of France is evident.

Quinn does well introducing and developing key characters. The further I read, the more involved I felt in both the individual and collective journey. I truly enjoyed how Quinn interwove history in this wartime spy novel.
Interesting but with a lackluster ending

Loved the historical details and setting and the way the author weaved three different stories and time periods into the novel. Didn’t care too much for the epilogue; should’ve ending with the christening ceremony instead of so many years later.
Love It!

aaaahhh I love this book so much i’ve read it way too many times honestly. The two stories that play simultaneously on each other really makes this book sparkle. The historical nature mixed with romance and mystery really does it for me.
